Atrophic Rhinitis

Cytomegalovirus rhinitis

Pseudorabies rhinitis

Answer: Atrophic Rhinitis

A pig’s nostrils contain four scroll-like structures termed nasal turbinates. In normal healthy pigs these four structures fill the nasal cavity similar to a four-leaf clover. When the pig inhales air is warmed prior to reaching the bronchi and lungs making the pig resistant to developing pneumonia. When these turbinates are malformed and defective, the pig is more susceptible to pneumonia. Atrophic rhinitis is best prevented by maintaining or purchasing rhinitis free pigs. Failing that vaccinations early in life will reduce the severity of the disease. See more details in my book, Doc Sanders Goes Whole Hog!.
